A Requirement Traceability Matrix (RTM) is a vital tool for business analysts(BAs).
It’s a structured document that links project requirements to their sources and traces them throughout the project lifecycle. The RTM helps ensure that every requirement is met and that changes are properly managed.
It ensures alignment between business needs and project deliverables, it helps BAs track how each requirement supports the overall project goals.
When project requirements change, the RTM helps assess the impact on other requirements, timelines, and costs.
BAs use the RTM to verify that all requirements are tested and validated by ensuring that nothing is overlooked in the testing phase.
Think of software development like building a car.
Each part of the car (the wheels, engine, seats) is like a piece of software.
Now, imagine you have a list that says what each part of the car should do. For instance, the wheels should turn smoothly, the engine should start quickly, and the seats should be comfortable.
The Requirement Traceability Matrix (RTM) is like that list. It keeps track of which part of the car (software) does what. So, if you want to change how the engine works (a requirement change), you can check the list (RTM) to see if it affects anything else in the car (other software parts) or how the car functions as a whole.
This way, the RTM helps ensure that when you change one thing, you don’t accidentally mess up how the entire car (software) runs. It’s like making sure changing the engine doesn’t make the seats uncomfortable!
A Requirement Traceability Matrix (RTM) ensures that each part of the project does what it’s supposed to do without affecting other parts. It keeps things organized and helps business analysts and project teams manage changes effectively.
